Natural Gas Conservation Tips

  • Turn down boilers or furnaces to 68º F in the winter. This is the most effective way to save energy and money.

  • Consider purchasing a programmable thermostat. This device can automatically adjust your home's temperature to save up to $150 a year.

  • Routine monitoring and maintenance is essential to reducing costs and remaining comfortable. A dirty furnace or A/C filter works harder to keep you warm or cool.

  • Properly sealing and insulating your home can reduce heating costs by as much as 30%. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, only 20% of homes built before 1980 are well insulated.

  • Look for the Energy Star™ label when purchasing new appliances.

  • Turn down your water heater thermostat to 120º F to save energy and money to heat water. If you go on vacation, turn the water heater thermostat down even further.

  • Insulate your water heater tank and water pipes with insulation jackets or blankets. These can reduce heat loss and raise your water temperature between 2 and 4 degrees.

  • Consider purchasing a tankless water heater. These appliances allow you to heat water only when you need it, and can cut energy usage by 10 to 15 percent.

  • Change your behavior. Take shorter showers, wash clothes in cold water, close blinds on the sunny side in summer to keep out the hot sun, and open them in winter to bring in warm rays.

Ready to Take Action?

If you are ready to reduce your home's natural gas consumption, and increase your home comfort, Charlottesville Gas can help. We offer Appliance Rebates for programmable thermostats and tankless water heaters, as well as a No-cost Home Weatherization Program for income-qualified residents. If you do not qualify for our home weatherization program, you can still contact the Local Energy Alliance(LEAP) to schedule a Home Energy Check-Up (HECU). During the HECU a LEAP Energy Coach will conduct an energy audit of your home, and provide resources for home energy improvements.
