CoupleThe Code of Virginia provides that the Sheriff may perform a wedding ceremony.  You do not need to be a resident of the City of Charlottesville to be married by the Sheriff. However, you must obtain a marriage license before the ceremony can be performed. Witnesses are not required for the ceremony but guests are welcomed. Please call the Charlottesville Circuit Court Clerk's Office (address at bottom of page) if you have questions about obtaining a marriage license at a cost of $30.00:  (434) 970-3766.

Sheriff Brown, Captain Marshall, and Sergeant Critzer are authorized to perform a civil wedding ceremony. The Sheriff's Office staff schedule weddings Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm, after regular business hours, and on weekends. Weddings can be performed in the Sheriff’s Office, in the empty courtroom, or in beautiful rose filled Jackson Park, weather permitting. Weddings can also be held at a site of your choice.

Please call the office to schedule an appointment and for more information: (434) 970-3777.
