Carver Recreation Center is the perfect place to get fit and have fun! Carver Recreation Center features over 33,000 sq. ft. of recreational space including: a fitness center with cardiovascular and strength training equipment; group fitness classes with offerings such as spinning and Zumba; personal training; a gymnasium, recreational studios for arts & crafts, gymnastics, and dance; plus a free hi-tech Teen Center. There also are over 600 art, enrichment, fitness, dance, and gymnastics classes offered each year at Carver! Check out the current registerend programs. Abs & Assets - There is no such thing as spot training, however, in 45 minutes learn various exercises to sculpt and tone your Abs and extra surrounding Assets (Glutes/Hips) for a tighter and leaner you.
Barre Strength- Develop a slim, tone, sculpted body with the Barre workout. Exercising to energizing music, this class incorporates upper body, core, and lower body movements to keep your heart rate up and burn calories. By utilizing the large lower body muscles with basic ballet moves and engaging your core throughout the workout, you are sure to get a beautiful sculpted body. So, take your shoes off and join us at the Barre.
Cardio Lite - Cardio Lite is a low impact dance aerobics class that combines great music and easy to follow dance moves to help burn calories and gain cardiovascular endurance. Come laugh, smile, and dance at your own pace!
Cardio Dance – Cardio Hip Hop is a dance-based cardio class designed to get you moving to a variety of hip hop songs. In this class you will sweat out your stress with fun hip hop moves. You'll use dance to strengthen and sculpt your body all while having lots of fun!
Cardio Kickboxing - Cardio kickboxing is a group fitness class that combines martial arts techniques with fast-paced cardio. This high-energy workout challenges the beginner and elite athlete alike. Build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility, and burn calories as you build lean muscle with this fun and challenging workout.
Ch’i Kung - With roots in Chinese medicine, philosophy, and martial arts, qigong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi), translated as "life energy". ... Qigong practice typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and calm meditative state of mind.
Core and Stretch - A quick 30 minute strength and balance workout which targets the abs, obliques, back, butt, and thighs. The class ends with a 10-15 minute deep stretch. This is the perfect class for those who feel the ache from sitting at a desk all day.
Cycle Express – This class is a great cardiovascular workout. Pedal through hill climbs, sprints, and many other challenging drills and exercises. All levels are welcome.
Cycle Plus - This total body workout starts with 30 minutes of cycling, followed by 30 minutes of strength training for the upper body and core using a variety of tools, and ends with 10 minutes of flexibility training on the mat. New to cycling? This class is a great way to try cycling in smaller doses!
Flow Yoga - Flow Yoga is an alignment based ashtanga style class with a strong emphasis on teaching students at all levels.
Gentle Stretch & Relax – This class incorporates basic yoga poses, stretches, deep breathing and relaxation practices that are accessible to all ages & abilities. This class is especially suitable for those who find open yoga classes too demanding, or just want a very gentle practice.
Gentle Yoga - Gentle yoga is a calming class, including flowing movement, classical hatha and restorative poses. This is a perfect class for beginners, those with limited flexibility or as a relaxing practice at the end of the day.
HER Flaws – This is a one hour drop in group exercise class offered through Charlottesville Parks & Recreation. This class is beginner friendly but will require you to explore your alter ego while learning an intense dance fitness routine. This class is not designed to be perfect but is designed to empower you to push yourself to the next level. As humans we naturally have flaws. So come as you are and do not be afraid to mess up. Messing up is a part of the human experience. Queens and Kings bring your flaws and all that is with in you. Learning lessons from our flaws is necessary for human growth. Whether you are happy, hurt, mad, or sad this class is a safe space to heal and grow. We will be dancing to Beyonce, Cardi, City Girls, and many more artist.
HIIT - The High Intensity Interval Training (HiiT) portion of our classes is designed to sculpt every part of your body, as well as increase stamina and improve strength. Think exercises using your own body weight: push-ups, planks, etc. Bonus: HiiT helps release MAJOR endorphins.
Line Dance Fitness – Line Dance Fitness is a dance class for adults to improve flexibility, balance, and agility and muscle tone. You'll learn fun combinations and choreography set to a variety of music genre’s that will exercise your body and mind.
Multi-Level Yoga - A Hatha yoga class focusing on postures (asana) and conscious breathing (pranayama) to develop strength, flexibility, balance and relaxation. Individualized adjustments and props provide a class open to all levels and abilities.
Pilates - Pilates is a form of low-impact exercise that aims to strengthen muscles while improving postural alignment and flexibility. Pilates moves tend to target the core, although the exercises work other areas of your body as well.
Pump - This is a full body workout that involves cardio to increase the heart rate, and resistance training to sculpt the arms, butt, and core. It is an intense workout to start your day out right and have you leave class feeling great!
She Slay - She SLAY is a one hour drop in group exercise class offered through Charlottesville Parks and Recreation. This class is for the perfectionist. This class is geared towards the advanced participants who have mastered H.E.R Flaws and All. The goal of this dance fitness class is more intense and more advanced choreography. This class if for those participants who are ready to take their fitness journey to the next level. SHE SLAY is a flawless dance fitness class that acknowledges participants growth on their life journey. This class will incorporate dance choreography inspired from Aliyah Janelle. This class is especially for those who feel comfortable in heels and anyone that feels comfortable doing splits, flips, rolls, and jumps.
Spin & Sculpt - Fast paced, high energy, always popular fun class! Utilizing various equipment, body weight exercises, and the Spin Bike. Shawn started this class over 18 years ago in Florida now sharing it in Central Virginia and DC areas in the last 8 years. Great way to mix up your routine!
Step it Up - A full body cardio workout using the step to get the heart rate thumping and target the muscles in the butt and thighs.
Stretch/AT - This class blends yoga poses with the practice of the Alexander Technique. We stretch, tone, and play. Let go of habitual tension to unfold and move with more ease and pleasure. Some hands-on guidance is offered.
Tabata - Timed Interval training designed to promote a maximum workout in short periods of time incorporating rest times for ultimate fat and calories burning.
Tai Chi – It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion.
TRX Combo - Developed in the Navy SEALs, suspension training allows you to use your own bodyweight to develop strength, balance, flexibility, and core stability at the same time. With the suspension trainer, you will be able to get a fast, effective total body workout, build a rock solid core, and increase muscle strength, and endurance. It benefits people of all fitness levels, from professional athletes to seniors, due to the fact that changing the resistance is as easy as changing your foot position. TRX - Get a fast and effective workout on the new suspension trainers (not as scary as it sounds!). A total body workout plus additional core strength focus. Restorative Yoga - Restorative yoga is a practice that is all about slowing down and opening your body through passive stretching. The majority of yoga classes are an active practice in which you move from pose to pose, building heat and increasing your strength and flexibility in equal measure.
Weekend Warriors - The Weekend Warrior Class uses weights, cardio, and intense circuits to help take your fitness to the next level! So come join Weekend Warriors, and leave the couch potato behind!
Yoga for All – A yoga class suited to all levels of practice for those who are in reasonably good health. We will offer variations on poses to accommodate everyone’s level of fitness & flexibility. The class aims to be varied and fun without being competitive. Each class will include movement, stretching, asana (poses), meditation or mindfulness and deep relaxation.
Yoga for Older Adults - A great introduction class for first time students or those looking for a gently paced class with detailed instructions. Students will learn a variety of poses, breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques. This class will move each student at their own pace deeper into their very own yoga practice.
Yoga Nirda - Yoga Nidra, or “yogic sleep,” is a comprehensive practice that goes far beyond deep relaxation to a place of natural peace and quiet. It is tremendously healing for body, mind, and spirit. This class is appropriate for students over 13, but especially beneficial to seniors, those recovering from surgery or injury, and anyone who suffers from anxiety or depression. Yoga Nidra practice offers students an effective tool to combat the stress of daily life. The class will be conducted with students lying on the floor.
Zumba - A Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class incorporating Latin and International music and dance movements, to create a dynamic and effective fitness system. The class format combines fast and slow rhythms to tone and sculpt the body to achieve a uniquely blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning benefits. Dancers and non-dancers alike immediately and easily master Zumba! Zumba creates a party-like atmosphere providing a non-intimidating opportunity to participate in group exercise classes. It's fun! It's different! It's easy! It's effective! Ditch the workout, join the party!
30 4 30 – This fast moving class is 30 seconds or 30 reps of various interval cardio and weighted workouts that get the heart racing and the body sweating! This is the perfect workout for the adult on a tight schedule. As this class is only 30 minutes long.
A $2.00 drop-In fee is required for all adults (18+) for open gym basketball.
Private Rental Information
Are you looking for a unique space in downtown Charlottesville to host your own special event? Carver Recreation Center is the perfect venue for meetings, wedding receptions, bridal/baby showers, or any private party! Carver has both a 4,800 square foot banquet hall with a seating capacity of 200, and a small meeting room for groups of up to 20. The banquet hall features hardwood floors with 15 ft. ceilings, an elevated stage, free Wi-Fi, tables and chairs, restrooms and a catering kitchen. Complimentary parking is also available on-site. On-going Center Programs & Activities:
Have some fun and burn some energy with free roller skating. All participants (or parent/legal guardian) must sign the participation waiver prior to skating.
Hours: Fridays 5:00 - 8:00 pm and Sundays 1:00 - 6:00 pm
Teen Center: Ages 11+
Provided as a free community resource, the Carver teen center is a supervised indoor space with a wide variety of table games and video games (many which focus on active movement) as well as televisions and internet access. It’s a safe and fun place for ages 11 and over to play and socialize close to home.
Hours: Monday – Thursday 5 pm-9 pm, Friday 5pm-8pm, Saturday and Sunday, 1 pm-6 pm
OPEN GYM BASKETBALL
Open gym time for basketball throughout the week Each open gym basketball time slot is designated for a specific age group (all ages, adult, or family). Adult open gym will be a structured 5-on-5 Pickup Basketball program. Please check the Open Basketball Gym Schedule for the most up to date schedule, as the hours change daily.

ART ADVENTURES (ages: 1-6 years)
This open studio, which runs January 9-May 18, uses traditional and non-traditional media to explore projects based on monthly themes. This class is designed to encourage students to learn through play and sensory experience as they create small and large works, exercising fine and gross motor skills. Parent/caregiver supervision is required. (No class on Jan 16, Feb 20, or Apr 3).
Hours: Mondays and Thursdays, 10:00am-11:30am
Fees: $7 per child/ per visit.
PARENT AND ME PLAYGROUP
Have fun and make new friends during our indoor play time in the gym. There will be toys, mats, and props available for children to explore freely and play with others. Active parental supervision is required.
Hours:: Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays 10:00am-12:00pm Sept. 9 - May 29.
