About the Programs
CDBG is the Community Development Block Grant from the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The program's purpose is the development of viable urban communities through the provision of the following, principally for low-and moderate income persons. The objectives of the Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnership programs are to benefit low/moderate income persons, aid in the prevention or elimination of slums/blight, to address urgent community needs, and provide affordable and safe housing.

The City receives federal funds annually through CDBG and HOME for housing, public services/social services, economic development, and community development projects. The funds are used primarily to benefit low and moderate income residents in the City. You can get involved with the CDBG/HOME grants and join the CDBG/HOME Taskforce. Taskforce members review applications requesting grant funds, and help make a recommendation to the Planning Commission and City Council on how the funds should be spent.
Types of projects that have been funded in the past include small business development assistance, childcare scholarships, re-entry services, workforce development training, homeowner rehab, down-payment assistance for home buyers, and facility improvements. Meetings are at an on-call basis, and typically meet through the months of November-February. This can range from 3-5 meetings per year.
You also have the option of joining the Ridge Street Priority Neighborhood Taskforce. Neighborhood projects are funded through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Funds go towards funding community development projects benefiting low and moderate-income residents of the City. Project examples of previous years include pedestrian safety and accessibility improvements (curb extensions, sidewalk improvements), and neighborhood beautification projects.
- 5 members from each of the target neighborhoods (low-moderate income areas): Belmont, Fifeville, 10th and Page, Ridge Street, and Rose Hill.
- 1 member of the City Planning Commission
- 1 member of the City School Board
- 1 member representing social issues
- 1 citizen at-large
- *Including elderly and handicapped persons, or representatives of them.
TERMS: 3 years (for low or moderate income representatives); 2 years (for citizens); other members: concurrent with terms on those boards.
