Charlottesville Fire Department includes a team of full-time, professional firefighters as well as support personnel and administrative staff. Our force includes firefighters of varying ages and backgrounds, unified around our core values of Family, Integrity,Respect, and Excellence.

In addition to fire suppression and prevention, we provide emergency response for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, including medical, hazardous materials, vehicle crashes, special technical rescue situations, and public service calls.

Our operations teams are assigned to one of three shifts — A, B, or C — and normally work a 56-hour workweek consisting of three 24-hour shifts (7 a.m. to 7 a.m. the following day) every nine days.

Our hiring process occurs around once a year. The last application period ended January 23, 2020.

Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company

Truck 1 training

Our team includes a select number of volunteers who work with our full-time members to provide fire suppression and emergency response support.

To become a member of the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company:

  • Fill out the application - available here online.
  • Present your completed application in person at the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire Company regular monthly meeting (see information below).

Please note | You must be at least 18 years of age. Volunteer applicants will be subject to a physical exam and drug screening.
