NOTICE: As of June 1, 2009, U. S. citizens must present a PASSPORT BOOK, PASSPORT CARD, or other travel documents approved by the U. S. Government to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land borders and seas ports of entry.

Renewal of a Passport
An adult passport can be renewed without the assistance of a passport agency. The process to complete one is here. (Adult-Passport Renewal) A minor’s passport cannot be renewed and requires a new application using the DS-11(Minor-Passport Renewal) form. We do assist people who need assistance with the renewal process however; you are still responsible for the mailing of this application.

Two (2) checks or money orders are needed at time of the appointment, per applicant, – (1) made payable to the City of Charlottesville, Treasurer for Acceptance Fees, and (1) made payable to the U. S. Department of State, for all necessary Passport fees.
The Passport Acceptance Facility in Washington D.C. is the only facility allowed to accept payment types other than check or money order.
What to bring with you
- Passport photo within the guidelines of the Department of State (Photo Requirements)
- Evidence of citizenship (original birth certificate, previous passport or Naturalization Certificate). NO COPIES
- A form of photo identification (government issued ID)
- Payment to accompany the application and processing fee for agency (two checks or money orders – debit or credit cards are not accepted)
- Original birth certificate for a minor. This is applicable for new and renewal minor passports.
(Do not sign passport applications prior to bringing them in for processing)
Processing Time and Application Status
•The normal processing time for a passport is four to six (4-6) weeks.
•If the passport is needed sooner, an expedited fee of $60 will be added to the U. S. Department of State fees and a separate payment of $25.20 to the U. S. Postmaster for overnight mailing services to and from the Passport Agency will be applied to the reference fees. Expedited applications are usually processed within 2-3 weeks of applying.
