CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Local community groups are working together to host the first annual spring Rivanna RiverFest on Saturday May 11. This will be a family-friendly event down at the Rivanna River with lots of activities happening throughout the day.

Events will start at 10:00 am with the Fix a Leak Family 5K starting at the City’s Riverview Park and the Rivanna River Race starting at the Route 29 Bridge at Rio Mills Road. Both will finish at Darden Towe Park’s Boat Launch, where there will be lots of community groups and entertainment to enjoy down by the river until 1:00 pm. You must register for both events and will you will get a Rivanna RiverFest event t-shirt with your registration.

Registration for Fix a Leak Family 5K is $20 for adults and $15 for youth (age 16 or under). This is a family-friendly race along the Rivanna River where you are once again asked to help stop the running toilet!

The Rivanna River Race’s registration is $40 for one person, $50 for a 2-person boat, and $5 for kids 12 and under. Racers will paddle 6.2 miles down the Rivanna River to Darden Towe Park. Please note that parking for these events is only available at Darden Towe Park. Transportation will be provided to 5K and River Race participants to their respective starting locations from Darden Towe Park. Spectators and anyone interested in attending Darden Tow Park based Rivanna RiverFest events should plan on parking at Darden Tow Park.

In addition, Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center will be hosting a special event to showcase the Rivanna River, called Underwater Photography, at Darden Towe Park. During the afternoon, you can make your way (including by boat) to Rivanna River Company for the Rivanna RiverFest Celebration where there will be music, food, and fun for the whole family from 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm. A shuttle between Darden Towe Park and Rivanna River Company will be available during this event as well.

The Rivanna RiverFest is bringing the community together to focus on the Rivanna River and the area’s water supply. In addition, the Fix a Leak Family 5K is bringing attention to keeping our water supply more sustainable through Charlottesville’s Fix a Leak campaign where the community is asked to check, twist, and replace:

  • CHECK for leaks. Look for dripping faucets, showerheads, sprinklers, and other fixtures.
  • TWIST and tighten hose and pipe connections. To save water without a noticeable difference in flow in your bathroom, twist on a WaterSense labeled faucet aerator.
  • REPLACE the fixture if necessary. Look for WaterSense labeled models. These models are independently certified to use 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models.

Come celebrate and experience your river this Saturday at the Rivanna RiverFest! The Rivanna RiverFest is being organized by The City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Rivanna Conservation Alliance, Rivanna River Company, Albemarle County Service Authority, Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority, The Nature Conservancy, and Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center.
