FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Update on winter weather conditions Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 4 p.m.

<

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville remains under a Winter Weather Advisory tonight.

Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed and increase their following distance. While the storm has cleared our area, drivers planning to travel early Wednesday morning should plan for extra travel time and be cautious as there may be some refreezing of road surfaces overnight.

Road conditions are rapidly improving with the application of chemicals and some sunshine, however, this brief but intense storm reminds us that every weather event is unique and should be approached with caution. The intensity of the storm, which dropped several inches of snow in a very short period of time, combined with significant daytime traffic, made it extremely difficult for Public Works crews to respond and resupply as needed.

The City encourages the community to avoid traveling on the roads during weather events, unless absolutely necessary, so that our crews can access and treat roads appropriately. Crews will be working throughout the night to monitor and treat as necessary in the event conditions worsen due to refreeze.

Trash & Recycling Pickup Schedule

• Afternoon pickup downtown will occur today.

• A small number of locations missed today for trash and recycling will be completed tomorrow.
