Join Us as We Celebrate Charlottesville's Grand Illumination 2019!

The City's 22nd annual tree-lighting event starts at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 6 at Sprint Pavilion and is free for the community!

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville and UVA Community Credit Union present Charlottesville's 22nd Annual Grand Illumination on Friday, December 6 at its NEW LOCATION AT SPRINT PAVILION with festivities beginning at 4:30 p.m.!

The City's annual tree-lighting event features live music, kids' crafts, fun activities, market vendors, Santa and friends, outdoor holiday movie screening, and over 20,000 LED bulbs illuminating the tree at City Hall Plaza!

SECURITY BAG CHECK

As this is a Sprint Pavilion-hosted event, bag checks will be a part of the security procedures implemented at the three designated entry points of the venue. Please refer to the EVENT MAP for more details.

COMPLIMENTARY PARKING

The City of Charlottesville is providing complimentary parking after 4 p.m. at both Market and Water Street garages.

WARMING CENTER

Event goers will have access to a warming center located at the Herman Key Recreation building adjacent to Sprint Pavilion.

FACILITY & ROAD CLOSURES

The Herman Key Recreation building will be closed to the general public from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. The 7th Street parking lot at City Hall and City Hall Annex will be closed from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. Additional ADA parking will be available on Market Street between 6th and 8th Streets from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. 2nd Street SW and 4th Street SE on the Downtown Mall will be closed to all vehicular traffic from 4–10 p.m.

ABOUT THE TREE

  The Grand Illumination tree is a 28-year-old, 25-foot Norway spruce donated by Albemarle County resident and former City of Charlottesville employee Betty Bollendorf. The tree is installed at its new location at City Hall Plaza and has been decorated with over 20,000 LED lights to be illuminated at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, December 6. When the tree is removed in early January it will serve as mulch for city school gardens. The community nicknamed the tree Spruce Springsteen after an online poll of over 1,100 votes!

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS HOLIDAY CONCERT (4:30–7 p.m.)

Grand Illumination emcee Andrea Copeland-Whitsett will be on the Sprint Pavilion stage hosting local bands and community choirs that will get toes tapping and hearts soaring! Use #cvillegrand on Twitter and Instagram to post on the pavilion big screen!

SANTA'S WORKSHOP (4:30–7 p.m.)

Kids can enjoy fun activities and get creative with holiday crafts provided by local businesses and nonprofit organizations while adults can collect helpful information.

REINDEER GAMES (4:30–7 p.m.)

  Kids can test their skills with fun, interactive games and inflatable obstacle courses!

GUMDROP SQUARE PRESENTED BY PARTY STARTS HERE (4:30–7 p.m.)

Pose for photos with Mrs. Claus and her North Pole friends, take a spin on the Holiday Train, and enjoy face painting and balloon art!

CHARLOTTESVILLE ALE TRAIL (5–9 p.m.)

 Try tasty selections of beer and wine from Charlottesville-area breweries!

 HOLIDAY MARKET (4:30–9 p.m.)

Over 25 city market vendors will be offering their unique holiday goods for sale!

COUNTDOWN TO GRAND ILLUMINATION! (7:15 p.m.)

Join us as we countdown to the Grand Illumination and watch as over 20,000 LED lights turn City Hall Plaza into a glowing wonderland!

PRESENTATION OF SANTA CLAUS (7:15 p.m.)

We may know when he'll arrive, but do we know how? You'll have to be there to see Santa's GRAND entrance!

HOLIDAY MOVIE (7:30 p.m.)

After the tree-lighting celebration, huddle up with friends and family under the Sprint Pavilion for a free screening of the classic holiday movie POLAR EXPRESS!
