City Council to hold work session with Native Americans to discuss Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea statue

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The public is invited to join Charlottesville City Council at a work session and Native American panel discussion regarding the disposition of the Lewis, Clark and Sacagawea statue on Friday, November 15, 2019, at 8:30 a.m. at Carver Recreation Center.

At its June 17, 2019 meeting, Charlottesville City Council directed staff to convene a meeting of Native American representatives to discuss the disposition of the statue on West Main Street. At Friday's work session, representatives from the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe, including descendants of Sacagawea, and representatives from the Monacan Indian Nation will both participate.

The approved schematic design for the West Main Street Streetscape Plan calls for the statue to be moved about 20 feet to the southwest from its current location. The work session will inform Charlottesville City Council's decision whether to move the statue as planned, recontextualize it further, or to remove it from the street entirely.

The proposed agenda for this meeting is as follows:

  • 8:30 AM:      Shoshone-led smudging ceremony (patio outside Carver Rec.)
  • 9:00 AM:      Mayor Welcome and introductions
  • 9:10 AM:      Monacan Indian Nation welcome
  • 9:20 AM:      City staff presentation
  • 9:45 AM:      Shoshone presentation and Statue discussion
  • 12:00 PM:    Lunch and continued discussion
  • 1:30 PM:      Wrap-up and finalizing steps moving forward

The work session video will be streamed live on the City's Facebook page and website.
