Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund Names Norm Carter 2019 Arts Award Winner

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund, a Charlottesville-based initiative designed to enhance artistic discovery and creativity, is pleased to announce Norm Carter, Photographer as winner of its sixth annual Arts Award.

The Arts Award celebrates inclusive art (visual art, music, writing, poetry, motion/dance) opportunities for people with disabilities within the community. An award celebration recognizing Norm Carter for promoting the art form of photography throughout the Charlottesville-Albemarle area is scheduled for Thursday, November 7, 2019 and is open to the public.

“Norm has been a photographer for more years than he says he can count,” writes Constance Wyant in her nomination. “He is an excellent photographer with a HUGE and generous heart, totally giving of his time and talent! His photographs bring joy and recognition and greater visibility to the people, and the mission of the organization and helps local nonprofits have high-quality photos to include on posters, presentations, PowerPoints and in memory books. He has photographed events for Access Arts Charlottesville/Albemarle, Bridgeline, Hospice of the Piedmont, Special Olympics and Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Adaptive Program.”

The Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund was created in May 2013 in honor of Mildred Spicer’s retirement from Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department after 33 years as Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.

In addition to recognizing a local artist/mentor, musician or writer or organization supporting the arts, the Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund provides individual scholarships to take classes and workshops related to the arts and to further develop individual art skills and expression.
