City to upgrade telephone systems during Oct. 23-27, 2019

Intermittent outages may occur after business hours; City shares guide to alternative telephone numbers for high priority calls from citizens and customers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville will be upgrading its telephone systems during October 23-27, 2019. During this time, and only outside normal business hours, some telephone lines will intermittently ring as busy, including lines frequently used by our citizens and customers.

The City has prepared the following guide for reaching key departments in an emergency should a telephone line not be operational.

Maintenance periods after normal work hours:

  • Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Thursday, October 24, 2019 at 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Friday, October 25, 2019 at 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Saturday, October 26, 2019 ALL DAY
  • Sunday, October 27, 2019 ALL DAY

Charlottesville Police Department

All emergency calls should continue to go to 911.

The non-emergency number (434) 970-3280 will not be available at times. Citizens should call the Regional Emergency Communications Center’s non-emergency number at (434) 977-9041.

Charlottesville Fire Department

All emergency calls should continue to go to 911. The non-emergency number (434) 970-3240 will not be available at times. Citizens should call the Regional Emergency Communications Center’s non-emergency number at (434) 977-9041.

Gas Utilities

The main number (434) 970-3800 will not be available at times. Citizens should call (434) 293-9164 or 911 in case of emergency.

Charlottesville Area Transit

The main number (434) 970-3649 will not be available at times. Citizens should call (434) 296-4529. Additionally, the automated arrival time telephone line will be down intermittently.

Department of Social Services

  • In the event of imminent danger to anyone’s life citizens should call 911 immediately. Calls to report possible child abuse, neglect, or a foster care emergency should go to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Child Protective Services hotline number at (800) 552-7096. Out-of-state callers should call (804) 786-8536.
  • Calls to report possible abuse or neglect of an adult please should go to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Adult Protective Services hotline number at (888) 832-3858.
