City Announces Downtown Parking Enhancements

Real time parking availability; New pay stations at City's Water St surface lot

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville announced today that real time parking availability data for the Market Street parking garage is now accessible via the City website and the MyCville smart phone app.

Residents and visitors may now have actual space availability information readily available, making downtown trips more predictable and efficient. The number of spaces available at the garage is now displayed, in real time, on the City website. The same information is available for smart phones via a link from the MyCville app. The app is freely available at the iPhone App or Google Play stores.

“The perception that parking garages are always full is simply not correct,” says Rick Siebert the City’s Parking Manager. “While our facilities see heavy use, particularly at mid-day during the week, there are almost always hundreds of spaces available in the afternoon and evening. By putting this real time information on line, we hope to dispel the notion that capacity does not exist.”

The real time parking availability information is yet another step by the City in improving access to parking in downtown Charlottesville. In the garages, the City has already invested in upgraded security cameras, modern payment systems, roving parking ambassadors and first hour free parking rates to improve the experience.

Real time parking availability information is expected to be available for the Water Street garage in the near future.

New pay stations at City's Water St Surface Lot

The City will be replacing coin-operated parking meters at the City's Water Street surface parking lot beginning this week. The new pay stations will be in use effective Monday, October 21, 2019.

The lot will have two pay stations, one located at the corner of 2nd Street SW and South Street, and the other located at the corner of 1st Street and Water Street. The pay stations will accept cash or credit card but will not provide change. The rate is $1 per hour and payment is required Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lot uses a pay-by-space system whereby parkers must enter their space number into the pay station at the time of payment.
