Water Street Shared Use Path Construction To Begin In October

Parking on south side of Water St between Belmont Bridge and 10th St NE will be unavailable during construction

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -Construction of the shared use path along Water Street between Belmont Bridge and 10th St NE will begin Monday, October 21.

Parking along the railroad side of the street will be removed during construction of the trail and restored once the project is complete. Vehicular traffic will experience temporary delays controlled by flaggers, pedestrian traffic will remain open along the existing sidewalk on the north side of the street.

The project will create an asphalt shared use path to improve bicycle and pedestrian connectivity in the downtown area and towards the Rivanna River and Meade Park. The path will be an extension of, and is nearly the same design as, the existing asphalt path extending past the coal tower to Meade Avenue. The plan also includes street trees, new lighting, stormwater management, and pedestrian crosswalk improvements. The project is expected wrap up by April 2020 barring any major winter weather delays or unforeseen circumstances.

Plans can be found at www.charlottesville.org/trails, or reviewed at 1300 Pen Park Road. Notice of the upcoming parking changes will be posted for the next two weeks. Comments may be submitted to the City's Traffic Engineering Department at (434) 970-3329 or via email to allenjh@charlottesville.org.
