Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Adaptive Recreation Celebrates 40 years in the Community with Annual Picnic

<

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Charlottesville Parks and Recreation will celebrates the 40th anniversary of its Adaptive Recreation Program with an annual picnic on Saturday, August 17 at Pen Park Shelters 1 and 2 from 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Formally called Therapeutic Recreation, the program was a result of a task force of community volunteers and healthcare professionals collaborating to establish recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

In 1979, the program, among the first in Virginia, began with weekly swimming and basketball activities. Today, Adaptive Recreation is a regional program offering classes, camps, overnight trips, outdoor recreation activities, sports, exercise, and social activities to over 12,000 participants a year, with financial support from Albemarle County Parks and Recreation.

In addition, Access Arts Charlottesville/Albemarle, under the umbrella of Adaptive Recreation, promotes and develops opportunities for art and creative expression for people of all ages and abilities, with a focus on serving individuals with disabilities. Hosting yearly art shows, musical performances, and instructional workshops, AACA offers artists the space to display their talent and determination.
