Government Services Day Returns this Friday
for City Residents
Posted Date: 9/10/2009

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA – Some different interactive events are scheduled for this year’s new fall appearance of the City of Charlottesville Government Services Day on the Downtown Mall. This move was done, in part, to avoid any conflict with Standards of Learning testing that typically occurs in the spring, coinciding with past events. This year’s event will take place Friday, October 2nd from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Two dozen City agencies and organizations, representing over 1,000 employees, will set up along the Mall in an effort to introduce the breadth and scope of city services, and the careers that are now available with City government. Children from all over the City are expected to attend the fair to learn about the functions of government and the effect it has on every day life. Private schools and homeschoolers as well are encouraged to attend. This year the Fair will also focus on how to save time, money, and energy.

The Fire Department’s Fire Safety house will be on display along with vehicles from various departments including Police and Public Works. Representatives from each department will be present to hand out information and answer questions. The popular Passport Tour will continue this year encouraging students to learn about more agencies with prizes and giveaways available at the end of the fair.

City Council members and City staff will invite the school groups into City Hall Council Chambers for a talk on the importance of government service and the roles of a City Councilperson. Also, the Charlottesville Police Department will demonstrate some of their skills in front of the crowd.

Parents and downtown workers and visitors are encouraged to participate as well. This year some businesses along the mall will also participate with kid friendly activities in conjunction with the annual event. For more information call the City at 970-3129.
