Each summer, Charlottesville Transit Service (CTS) offers a Youth Ride FREE program that is open to residents of the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Thousands of students take advantage of unlimited access to convenient, environmentally-friendly public transit during the summer break every year. Ridership for the 2009 Summer Youth Ride FREE program reached record levels, with total boardings increasing over Summer 2008 by 84%.
All youth ages 6 to 18 who reside in Charlottesville or Albemarle County are eligible to participate in the program. CTS will make photo IDs allowing youth to ride CTS FREE from June 12 through August 24, 2010.
Parents must return a signed permission form to their child’s school before the scheduled photo day in order for their child's picture to be taken at school.

If a child misses the photo shoot day, an appointment may be made to have the child’s picture taken for free at the Downtown Transit Station on Water Street. Residents of Albemarle County who wish to have a free photo ID made for their child may schedule an appointment as well.
Before a picture can be taken for the photo ID, proof of residency in either Charlottesville or Albemarle County and a signed, completed Parental Permission Form must be provided.
Individual photo appointments will be available from May 3 through June 4, 2010. Beginning on June 12, 2010, CTS will charge $10.00 for all photo IDs for the Summer Ride program. For more information, call CTS at 970-3649.
In addition to the CTS Summer 2009 Youth Ride FREE program, Charlottesville Transit Service offers a Year-Round Ride FREE Program to Charlottesville High School that allows CHS students to ride CTS fare FREE with a separate photo ID. Current CHS Year-Round Ride FREE IDs were produced for nearly 80% of the CHS student body in January 2010, and are valid through October 31, 2010.
