A Community Partnership with the City and the Health Department

girlThere is a new effort under way to ensure that the community understands the bigger health concerns and initiatives that are facing Charlottesville. The Thomas Jefferson Health District along with the City Manager’s Office are proud to present HealthWhys, a continuing program to introduce some of the health challenges facing our community. To start the series the initiative focused on the role of public health:

Your health department promotes health by:

  • Reducing illness and saving healthcare costs by making sure children are vaccinated against serious diseases such as tetanus, meningitis, and polio.
  • Controlling and preventing diseases that spread person-to-person like tuberculosis.
  • Supporting the health of vulnerable pregnant women and young children through nutrition education and WIC vouchers redeemable for healthy food.
  • Ensuring child passenger safety by distributing car seats with guides on their proper use.
  • Preventing infant deaths due to SIDS through its Safe Sleep Program.
  • Working to ensure that the food you eat in restaurants, cafeterias and at public events is prepared safely to reduce the risk of foodborne illness.
