The Facilities Development Division also oversees various capital projects related to the City’s 9 School Facilities, which includes; 6 elementary schools, 1 upper elementary school, 1 middle school, and 1 high school,
as well as the Charlottesville-Albemarle Technical Education Center (CATEC).

Here are a few examples of completed School Facilities Projects:

CATEC Information and Engineering Technology Academy:
Approximately 3,000 sf of existing interior space within CATEC was gutted and completely renovated this summer (2016)  by the City’s Facility Development team to make way for the new CATEC Information and Engineering Technology Academy.  This project was fully funded by CATEC and renovations included:  a networking lab where students can study networking and related security; a break-fix lab where students get direct hands-on experience dissecting computer hardware, diagnosing, and learning to make repairs; a collaboration space where students and faculty can meet casually, or formally, to discuss techniques, applications, and best practices for IT networking and security; and, an on-line meeting room where small groups of students and faculty will be able to conduct on-line meetings with Cisco, Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) or other educational partners.

Charlottesville High School Science Labs:
In 2015, the City’s Facility Development team renovated nine existing science lab classrooms at Charlottesville High School.  Goals were to modernize the science labs and to incorporate day-lighting where appropriate.

Buford Middle School Science Labs:
In 2013, at the request of the Charlottesville School Division, City Council appropriated funds for the re-design and construction of four state-of-the-art science lab classrooms and associated spaces at Buford Middle School. The goal was to incorporate STEM engineering lab capabilities into each lab room - providing the physical and online spaces where teachers and students could create, experiment and test ideas in collaboration with professors and students from Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) and University of Virginia (UVA).
