In weather-related emergencies, Charlottesville Parks & Recreation programs, events, classes and rentals at Parks & Recreation facilities and parks will be cancelled based upon the closing decision of City of Charlottesville Public Schools. When a weather emergency occurs on a holiday and/or when schools are not in session, the Cityʼs Communications Office will give information regarding departmental cancellations and closings to the news media.
Charlottesville Parks & Recreation reserves the right to cancel or close in advance of City of Charlottesville Public Schools, should weather and public safety conditions warrant. Parks & Recreation also reserves the right to modify operations based on its own public safety assessment (unless the City is officially closed).
IN THE CASE OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, SEE BELOW TO UNDERSTAND HOW YOUR CLASS OR ACTIVITY WILL BE AFFECTED:
IF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED ALL DAY:
All registered programs and events will be cancelled. Carver Recreation Center and Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center will operate from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Key Recreation Center will operate from 12:00 – 5:00 pm. All other facilities will be closed. Private rentals may occur at Carver Recreation Center, Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center or Key Recreation Center during the modified hours, at the renterʼs discretion.
IF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OPEN TWO HOURS LATE:
All Parks & Recreation programs, classes, events and rentals beginning before 10:00 am will be cancelled; those beginning at 10:00 am or later will operate as scheduled. All Parks & Recreation facilities and offices will be open for normal business hours except for Carver Recreation Center and Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center, which will open at 10:00 am.
IF CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS CLOSE TWO HOURS EARLY:
All Parks & Recreation programs, classes, events and rentals beginning after 12:00 pm will be cancelled; those beginning before 12:00 pm will operate as scheduled. All Parks & Recreation facilities and offices will close at 5:00 pm.
IF CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS DO NOT DISMISS EARLY, BUT CANCEL ALL AFTER-SCHOOL AND EVENING ACTIVITIES:
All Parks & Recreation programs, classes, events and rentals will end at 5:00 pm. All Parks & Recreation facilities and offices will close at 5:00 pm.
IF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE CLOSES FOR BUSINESS:
All Parks & Recreation programs, classes, events and rentals will be cancelled. All Parks & Recreation facilities and offices will be closed for the same duration that the City is closed for business.
IN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER WHEN CITY SCHOOLS ARE NOT IN SESSION OR A NON-SCHOOL DAY:
The Parks & Recreation Department reserves the right to cancel programs and close facilities should weather conditions warrant. Notifications of cancellations and closings will be made through the Cityʼs Office of Communications and will be on the City website. Cancellation and closing information will also be posted to the Inclement Weather Hotline: (434) 970-3593.
RESCHEDULING OF CANCELLED PROGRAMS, CLASSES, EVENTS AND RENTALS:
Every effort will be made to reschedule cancelled programs. Scheduling of makeup dates and times will be provided at the next regularly scheduled class session. Should makeup programs not be scheduled, participants will receive a prorated refund. Rescheduling of rentals can be coordinated by contacting Charlottesville Parks & Recreation at (434) 970-3260. If no rescheduled date can be arranged, fees will be refunded.
