Parks Planning and Improvement

The Parks Department is working to ensure all City Parks offer safe, pleasant, and worthwhile experiences for our visitors.  As we develop these plans, we meet with neighborhoods, other City departments, including police and utilities, and hold public workshops in order to determine a balanced plan for each park's unique needs.

A public process for creating a master plan for the east side of the park is complete.  The next phase is moving the skate park and hiring a design firm to work out the details of the parks layout.  For more information, go to www.charlottesville.org/mcintirepark.

A paved commuter trail is being built along the north side of the 250 bypass from Hydraulic Road through McIntire Park to the railroad tracks and to the new interchange.

The City has also been awarded a SAFETEA-LU/MAP-21 grant from V.D.O.T. to build a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the railroad tracks to connect the two sides of McIntire Park. A presentation about the bridge project is available here.  This project will go to bid in February 2017 for construction in summer 2017. A fact sheet with images of the bridge is available here.
