Boating in Charlottesville
Kayaking and canoeing are great way to explore the Rivanna River and its tributaries
Boat launch areas for the Rivanna River are available at Riverview Park and Darden Towe Park. You can get into the river at Pen Park, but there is no formal boat launch.
Non-gasoline powered boats are allowed at South Fork Rivanna and Ragged Mountain reservoirs. The South Fork has a boat launch and parking area on Woodland Road. Ragged Mountain has parking near the dam and boats must be hand carried to the lake. Boats equipped with internal combustion engines whose use is prohibited shall have the engine tilted in a non-operating position when within the boundaries of the reservoirs. If such boats are equipped with or utilize removable gas tanks, the gas tanks shall be removed prior to entering reservoir waters
No boats of any kind are allowed on Sugar Hollow reservoir.
The Va Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has a list of regional boat launches on their website
