The Historic Resources Committee meets monthly on the second Monday from 11 a.m. until noon in the Neighborhood Development Services Conference Room, City Hall.  The public is welcome.

The HRC is currently updating the Court Square markers.

The Historic Resources Committee and the Burley High School Varsity Club commemorated the students, athletic coaches, and history of Jackson P. Burley High School (1951-1967) on October 8, 2010 with the dedication of three plaques.  

Visit the school to see plaques that describe:

  • Burley High School's role in the history of Charlottesville's schools during the time of integration
  • football coaches Robert "Bob" Smith and Clarence "Butch" Jones
  • basketball coaches Walter "Rock" Greene and Albert "AP" Moore

A dedication ceremony for the Sacajawea plaque was held on June 19, 2009 at the Lewis & Clark statue on West Main Street at Ridge Street.  Following the ceremony, everyone proceeded via the Downtown Mall to the Charlottesville Community Design Center (CCDC) at 100 5th Street NE for a reception and panel discussion on "The Role of Art in Interpreting History."

Visit the Historic Resource Committee's rotating historic display on the first level of the Transit Station opposite City Hall. The current display is Court Square Markers.

New Charlottesville Walking Tour booklets are now available in the Department of Neighborhood Development Services.

The name of the Historic Resources Committee was officially changed by City Council from the original Historic Resources Task Force on September 18, 2006.
