 The purpose of the Building Codes is to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety, and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency operations.

CURRENT CODES 

Effective July 14th, 2015 all applications  for a permit must comply with the provisions of the 2012 code editions and/or 2011 edition of  National Electrical Code.

All other permits issued under the previous code editions are allowed to be completed following the requirements of said code editions.

NOTE: Section R501.3 of the Virginia Residential Code has been deleted. An errata will be posted on the DHCD and ICC websites to correct the already published codes. Please click here for more information.

2012 Virginia (Statewide) Fire Prevention Code (Enforced by the Fire Marshal after the Certificate of Occupancy has been issued.)

2012 Virginia Rehabilitation Code (New code; required for maintaining minimum safety standards in existing buildings undergoing repair, renovation or change of use.)

Note: These codes also refer to a number of standards which becomes part of the Virginia adopted codes. (Example: NFPA 13 sprinkler system standard referenced often in the VCC) The standards required are listed in the appendix of each code.
