Be Part of Our Team
Charlottesville Fire Department includes a team of full-time, professional firefighters as well as support personnel and administrative staff. Our force includes firefighters of varying ages and backgrounds, unified around our core values of Family, Integrity,Respect, and Excellence.
In addition to fire suppression and prevention, we provide emergency response for the City of Charlottesville and the University of Virginia, including medical, hazardous materials, vehicle crashes, special technical rescue situations, and public service calls.
Our operations teams are assigned to one of three shifts — A, B, or C — and normally work a 56-hour workweek consisting of three 24-hour shifts (7 a.m. to 7 a.m. the following day) every nine days.
Our hiring process occurs around once a year. The last application period ended September 20, 2018. The previous one to that ended September 19, 2017.
The hiring process is currently closed.
Please see the Employment Resources page for further information on the hiring process.

Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad Live-In Program
At Station 10, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad has four live-in members. These members are provided with free housing and a meal stipend in exchange for running extra shifts at the rescue squad.
The live-in program provides rescue squad members with a unique opportunity – being able to live in an active fire station. Residents of Station 10 have access to an expansive in-house gym, private lounge, commercial kitchen, and private off-street parking. The live-in members of the rescue squad have private rooms with plenty of storage, provided furniture including mini fridge, and their own pantry and fridge in the kitchen.
Residents also have an ambulance in-house that they may use to run emergency calls.
To participate in the live-in program, you must be a member of the rescue squad and be able to sign a live-in agreement for either 6 or 12 months.
