FOR THE ELDERLY AND DISABLED
The City of Charlottesville provides real estate tax relief for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners who meet the following criteria:
- Property owner is 65 or older as of December 31st or totally and permanently disabled
- Property owners claiming total and permanent disability must provide either two sworn statements from physicians verifying the owner's degree of disability or a copy of the Social Security disability statement
- Owner's total income for the year does not exceed $50,000, including all income, except disability income. The maximum exclusion for disability income is $7,500
- Owner's total assets less total liabilities, excluding the property for which tax relief is sought, must not exceed $125,000
If you meet the requirements for real estate tax relief listed above, you may file an application with the Commissioner of Revenue. You must submit an application by March 1st of each year in order to get relief on your taxes.
