The Therapeutic Recreation Program is for individuals, ages 8 and up, with physical and or mental disabilities whose recreational needs cannot be met by regular programs. The goals of the activities are to improve self-esteem, health, social skills, recreation skills, safety skills, and independence while having fun. Staff participant ratio is usually 1 to 8.

Day/Overnight Trips - Day and overnight trips are planned for individuals with disabilities.

The Charlottesville Cardinals encourage teens and adults with mobility limitations who are interested in competitive wheelchair basketball to join their weekly Thursday evening practices. The local team plays games against teams from Virginia Beach, Northern Virginia, Richmond, Maryland, North Carolina, and other east coast teams. Basketball - Teens and adults. Mondays 3:45-4:45 pm Fall through Spring. Come practice skills with your friends. Participants needing one to one assistance need to come with an aide or volunteer. Drop in activity.

Therapeutic Water Exercise - $1.00 per time---Mon, Wed & Thurs---11-12 noon---Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center. Group instruction in water exercise, beginning swimming skills & water games are offered. Participants must be able to care for themselves in the dressing room. Limited openings.

Therapeutic One-On-One Swim Instruction - $60(R) $80(NR)
For non-ambulatory or extra special needs children, teens, & adults one on one instruction once a week for six sessions. Times and days vary depending on participant and instructor. Special Olympic Training - Providing skill training and recreation in the areas of soccer, bowling, skiing, basketball, swimming, tennis, track & field, gymnastics and golf. These activities are sponsored by Virginia Area 3 Special Olympics which serves athletes ages 8 & above with mental retardation or significant cognitive disabilities. www.specialolympicsva.org
Cooperative Effort / Funding - The Charlottesville and Recreation Department has a cooperative partnership with Albemarle County Parks and Recreation Department and Region Ten Community Services in administering recreation for individuals with disabilities. Both agencies contribute annually to the City Therapeutic Recreation budget. The three agencies work closely with one another in providing comprehensive recreation activities. Participants in the program also contribute financially to the program through class fees and donations. Individuals and private organizations often make financial donations. Through cooperative efforts of many individuals and organizations the City is able to offer high quality therapeutic recreation to the Charlottesville Albemarle area. Thank you Albemarle County Parks and Recreation, Region Ten Community Services, Therapeutic Participants and the Public for continued support.

An annual book of poems is written by individuals with disabilities and their parents, caregivers, counselors, etc. through VSA arts of Charlottesville Albemarle, Charlottesville Therapeutic Recreation and the Independence Resource Center. Summer Therapeutic Camps
Every summer the City sponsors a playground program for children with moderate disabilities, ages 8-21, at Crow Recreation Center, The program runs from 9 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. After the summer camp program ends there is a 1 week Camp Creativity Program, a 1 week Camp Green Challenge Program for teens with disabilities and a 1 week adult camp.
