Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) is announcing a detour on Route 5, which provides service to Barracks Road Shopping Center and Walmart. The detour is a result of road construction on Georgetown Road, and will be in effect from Tuesday, July 5 through Thursday, August 25. This is an update to the information previously released, which had announced the detour would begin on Tuesday, June 28.
Route 5 northbound service from Barracks Road Shopping Center to Walmart may be delayed, but will not be detoured. However, southbound service from Walmart to Barracks Road will be detoured.
Route 5 southbound will travel east on Hydraulic Road from Commonwealth Drive, proceed south on Emmet Street, and resume service at Barracks Road Shopping Center. Southbound stops on Hydraulic Road, Georgetown Road, and Barracks Road will not be served during the detour.
As stated on Albemarle County’s website, “the construction project will provide a safer and more efficient vehicle, bicycle, pedestrian and transit corridor along Georgetown Road between Barracks Road and Hydraulic Road. Improvements are to include curb and gutter, a separate sidewalk, and safer transit stops.”
Service may be affected throughout the route. All Route 5 riders should expect delays, especially in and near the construction area on Georgetown Road. CAT thanks riders in advance for their patience during the detour.
