- Trash may not be set out at the curb prior to 6PM on the day preceding collection.
- Empty cans must be removed from the curb no later than 12 hours following collection.
Individual trash stickers and annual trash decals are available in the City Hall Lobby and at many convenience and grocery stores in the Charlottesville area.
The appropriate sticker must be placed on trash bags set out for collection. Both types of stickers are available in sheets of 12, though citizens may purchase as few as one at a time. 13- gallon trash stickers sell for $1.05 each and 32-gallon stickers sell for $2.10 each. Individual 32-gallon trash bags set out for collection must not exceed a weight of 50 lbs. and individual 13-gallon trash bags must not exceed a weight of 25 lbs.

An alternative to individual trash stickers for weekly collection is the annual trash decal. The decal is valid for one fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). The annual trash decal is placed on a 32 gallon, 50 gallon, 64 gallon, or 96 gallon container. A decal must be purchased for each container you plan to use. Full containers must not exceed a weight of 50 lbs for a 32 gallon container, 75 lbs for a 50 gallon container, 100 lbs for a 64 gallon container, or 150 lbs for a 96 gallon container. The decals will bear the address for which they were purchased and may not be used at any other address.
Annual trash decals are renewed in June of each year. The price for 32 gallon containers is $94.50, for 50 gallon containers is $147.00, for 64 gallon containers is $189.00 and for 96 gallon containers the price is $283.50. Annual decals are yellow in color and may also be purchased at any other time of the year at a pro-rated price.
Decals for the upcoming year may go on sale prior to June 15th.
After June 15th, only decals for the upcoming decal year may be purchased.
If you should move during the decal year, you may return your old decal and obtain a transfer decal for your new address for a fee of $5.00.
If your decal is lost, stolen, or accidentally destroyed, you may obtain a replacement upon filing an affidavit at the Treasurer's Office and paying a replacement fee of $5.00.
Annual trash decals may only be purchased in the lobby of City Hall.
Customers located in the Downtown and Uptown trash collection area may use daily stickers, or quarterly decals placed on cans or wheeled carts.

Trash and recycling will not be collected on Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving day, Christmas day, or New Years day. These services will resume on the next working day and continue a day behind through the rest of the week, including Saturday.
In late October of each year, free leaf bags are available to City residents for use in leaf collection. Leaf bags may be obtained at the Public Works Administration Building on 4th Street NW or in the lobby of City Hall. They will also be delivered along refuse pick-up routes.
