There are many opportunities for exposure to the lively cultural scene in Charlottesville. In addition to the University which schedules numerous plays, concerts, and lectures a large group of community organizations also support the arts. These include the Charlottesville University and Community Symphony Orchestra, Community Children’s Theatre, and the Virginia Players. Be sure to explore Charlottesville’s diverse art galleries on “First Fridays” the first Friday of every month.
Charlottesville is situated in the midst of a number of historic attractions, which receive thousands of visitors each year and also serve as focal points seasonal events. Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, overlooks the city and is the site of the annual Monticello Wine Festival. Historic Michie tavern boasts a 200 year tradition of hospitality and still provides authentic colonial fare.
The Charlottesville area offers a wide variety of housing options including city, suburban, and rural locations. Choices include “walk to everything” downtown mall apartments or condos, to university neighborhoods, to golf course and planned communities with mountain vistas.
Charlottesville residents have access to some of the finest medical services. The University of Virginia Health Sciences Center ranks among the top teaching facilities and provides some of the best medical facilities and practitioners in the nation. The University Hospital has 600 patient beds and includes a Level One trauma center, eight intensive care units, nineteen operating rooms, and seven specialist centers on site.
Martha Jefferson is a non-profit community hospital with 200 beds that has been serving the area for over 90 years. The hospital offers a unique physician referral program called “Health Connection” which provides information on many area physicians.
To help maintain a health lifestyle there are an abundance of recreational opportunities in the Charlottesville area. The City maintains a comprehensive recreation program that includes 20 parks, swimming facilities, tennis courts, and ball field with picnic areas. The Charlottesville Ice Park is right on the Downtown Mall. Big time ACC football comes to town with over 350,000 spectators attending the UVA home football games each year. Hiking and camping in Shenandoah National Park are only a short drive from the city.
