The Facilities Development Division oversees various capital projects related to approximately 50 Government Facilities. These facilities include, but are not limited to; City Hall and City Hall Annex, various department office buildings and properties, City libraries and fire stations, parks & recreation facilities (including aquatic facilities), court facilities, transit facilities and parking garages.

Here are a few examples of either recently completed or ongoing Government Facilities Projects:

Fontaine Fire Station:

Substantial completion of the new Fontaine Fire Station is now complete at the intersection of Fontaine Ave & Summit Street. The design is a four-bay, bi-directional station; with a net floor area of 40,922 SF; including 14 individual sleeping rooms, three bunk-style rooms, and 32 below-grade parking spaces. Also included is a 40-seat training & community room. The fire department took occupancy of the building on October 21, 2013.

Smith Aquatic Center:

The construction project at Smith Aquatic Center is now complete and includes a new 24,330 sf aquatic & wellness center. This facility houses a 6-lane competition pool with a 1-meter diving board and a separate family & recreational pool with 2 water slides, a lazy river and various play features.
Sustainability Achievement: LEED PLATINUM

The Smith Aquatic Center is also one of 10 winners of the 2011 Facility of Merit awards. The winning facilities have been posted in the AB Newswire and will be featured in the December issue of Athletic Business. Winners will be honored at the 2011 Athletic Business Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida on Friday, December 2, 2011.

Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT):


The new Charlottesville Area Transit (CAT) facility was recently completed in May 2010. It encompasses 4 buildings on approximately 6-acres and is considered Phase 1 of the City's Master Plan for a multi-phased project for new facilities for CTS, Pupil Transit, and the City's Dept. of Public Works (Fleet Mgmt, Public Works Admin, Public Utilities, and Public Service) on a 60-acre project site located at 1530 Avon Street in Albemarle County.

Forest Hills Park:

Forest Hills Park

In 2010, the City completed a major renovation of Forest Hills Park, which consisted of replacing the existing aquatic features, playground, shelters, and the implementation of the park Master Plan in general. In their place a new 6,500 sf sprayground, 2 playground areas, restroom pavilion, open air pavilion, basketball court, and hard surface trails were constructed.
