CAYIP Seeking Businesses And Organizations To Host Teen Interns This Summer

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -Community Attention Youth Internship Program (CAYIP) is calling for businesses and organizations to host teen interns this summer. CAYIP’s goal is to cultivate 115 site partners this summer in order to enroll about 150 teens during the 6-week long summer program.

Host sites provide hands-on learning opportunities for interns 20 hours a week for five weeks this summer from July 1 – August 2 2019. CAYIP offers opportunities across many sectors including animal care, barbering and cosmetology, childcare, elderly care, landscaping and maintenance, retail, culinary, and auto mechanics and auto body. Partners not only serve as managers and supervisors, but they also serve as mentors for local teens.

“We know that youth are more likely to be successful if they have at least one, positive, caring adult in their life. This is how CAYIP builds community resilience,” said Misty Graves, Interim Director of Human Services.

CAYIP interns build capacity for the sites they serve. In addition, they serve as ambassadors for these organizations since they often adopt the mission and share their positive experiences in their community.

“Over the two years that I have been involved, the four interns I have hosted have helped me tremendously with staying organized and helped me to become a better supervisor,” said Jennifer Mowad, owner of Cocoa and Spice.

If anyone is interested in hosting a teen at their business or organization, please contact CAYIP Coordinator, Annie Sechrist at 989-6371 or sechrista@charlottesville.org. There will be a Site Supervisor Appreciation and Planning Breakfast on May 16, 2019 at City Space from 9:00 am – 10:30 am for current and new partners to learn more.
