MEDIA ADVISORY
January 13, 2019

Update on winter weather conditions Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The City of Charlottesville remains under a Winter Storm Warning until midnight tonight.

ROAD CONDITIONS

Public safety officials and the Virginia Department of Transportation continue to urge motorists to stay off the roads as temperatures drop into the evening hours, creating potential for refreeze and black ice. Watch for unexpected icy spots, especially on bridges and shady areas overnight and on the morning commute.

Public Works crews in the City of Charlottesville will continue working overnight to make all roads passable. As of 7:30 p.m. Sunday, City primary streets are in FAIR condition and secondary streets are in MODERATE condition.

If travel is a must, drivers are advised to use caution, drive slowly, and allow public safety vehicles and snowplows the right of way. Please remember to remove all snow from your vehicle - including the roof - before venturing out.

SERVICE DELAYS, ADJUSTMENTS, AND CLOSINGS

Charlottesville City Hall offices will open on a normal schedule at 8 a.m. Monday, January 14.

Charlottesville City Schools will be CLOSED on Monday, January 14. All programs are cancelled unless otherwise notified.

Charlottesville Parks and Recreation's inclement weather policy will be in effect for Monday, January 14. All registered programs are cancelled. Carver Recreation Center and Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Key Recreation Center will be open Noon to 5 p.m. All other facilities are closed.

Charlottesville Circuit Court & Clerk's Office will open at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 14.

CLEARING OF SIDEWALKS

Sidewalks in the City of Charlottesville should be cleared of snow by property owners by 6 a.m. Tuesday, January 15.

Charlottesville City Code requires that property owners remove snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of snowfall. Per City Code Section 28-25, it is the responsibility of owners/occupants of properties in the City which abut or front paved sidewalks to clear the sidewalk of snow, sleet and ice.

As the snow will end overnight, the City Manager has declared 6 a.m. Monday to be the official end of snowfall. Snow must be removed from sidewalks by 6 a.m. Tuesday, January 15.

Cleared sidewalks help ensure the safety of both pedestrians and motorists by giving those on foot a safe route to walk. Walking in the roadway is extremely dangerous. Please clear the entire width of the sidewalk rather than a shovel width to allow strollers and wheelchairs a clear pathway.

The City of Charlottesville reminds the community to be safe and healthy when shoveling snow and to assist neighbors who may have difficulty removing snow from their property. If you would like to report an unshoveled sidewalk, please call 970-3182 or use the MyCville app.
