SUSPECT DETAINED AFTER INCIDENT ON DOWNTOWN MALL

Suspect committed to Western State Hospital, will be served with warrant for attempted malicious wounding

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Officers responded to the report of a male suspect threatening another man with a knife Friday evening, December 28, 2018, on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall.

Upon the officers arrival to the scene, the suspect dropped the knife. The officers then detained the suspect, as they investigated further.

Based on the information officers had at the time and the suspect’s behavior, he was taken into custody under an Emergency Custody Order for mental evaluation. He was then transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center Emergency Room and ultimately committed to Western State Hospital.

After further investigation and reviewing video of the incident, the officers obtained a warrant for attempted malicious wounding. Service of that warrant will be coordinated between police and the hospital. The suspect’s name will not be released until that process has been completed. Additional charges are pending.
