The City of Charlottesville is announcing street closures related to the Belmont Bridge Replacement project design effort.

Schnabel Engineering LLC will be performing geotechnical drilling for the Belmont Bridge Replacement project during several work periods this month.

Safety flagging of traffic and signage of the streets and dates will be conducted as follows:
  • Water Street, Bus lane shoulder closure June 10
  • Water Street, under bridge June 12, 13
  • Old Avon Street, June 14, 18, 19
Traffic will be maintained in both directions. Please expect slight delays. The posted speed limit will be 25 MPH and the public is asked to please drive carefully.

The Belmont Bridge Replacement project design is 60 percent complete. The environmental document has been signed off by VDOT and the Federal Highway Administration and a Project Design Public Hearing was held May 24, 2018. Following the public hearing, the comments received will be presented to the City Council as part of Council public hearing on the design. Staff has initiated preliminary Right-of-Way acquisition discussion with the potential property owners that may be impacted by the project. Construction is scheduled to begin before summer 2020.
