Update from City of Charlottesville on flood response efforts
Our neighbors in Albemarle County continue to operate under an emergency declaration after last night’s major flooding event. City staff have provided support for planning and communications activities at the Regional Emergency Operations Center since late Wednesday evening.
No storm or flood-related injuries have been reported in the City of Charlottesville.
Several City parks including Riverview Park and Riverview Trail, Azalea (limited closure – restrooms, playground, dog park), and the Meadowcreek Golf Course remain closed due to flooding. Damage assessments will not be possible until the flooding subsides. According to Dominion Power, 193 customers are without power in the City. No public safety response resources have been requested from the City at this point.
A race event scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at Riverview Park has been postponed due to trail and park conditions.
One victim from a flash flood incident in Albemarle County at Old Ballard Rd and Ivy Creek has been recovered and family notification has been made. The search continues for a second missing person related to the same event.
The search in the Ivy Creek area will resume Friday morning and is being conducted by Search and Rescue teams utilizing water rescue and ground search teams, unmanned aerial vehicles, and search dogs. The damage assessment process is ongoing and will likely extend over several days.
The forecast for tonight and through the weekend includes the potential for additional rainfall and the public is reminded to observe all safety precautions and avoid driving on any water covered roads.Turn around, don't drown.
