Charlottesville welcomes delegation from Sister City of Besançon, France

Post Date:05/08/2018 11:46 AM
The City of Charlottesville will welcome a delegation from its Sister City of Besançon [“Bez-awn-sawn”], France, May 9-13, for business and cultural exchange.

The Charlottesville Sister Cities Commission (CSSC) has arranged for Besançon’s mayor and four other officials to explore the area and participate in roundtable discussions with a variety of local citizens. Highlights will include tours of the University of Virginia Lawn and Cabell Hall; the Jefferson School and Jefferson School African American Heritage Center; and the Darden School of Business and iLab.

The visit begins with a public Welcoming Ceremony Thursday, May 10, at 11 a.m. at McGuffey Art Center, 201 W. 2nd St. There, Vice Mayor Heather Hill (tentative), City Manager Maurice Jones, and other Charlottesville officials will mark the event with an official proclamation, present the Besançon delegation with the Key to the City, and give the group a gift. They will also make a special announcement.

Roundtable discussions are also open to the public. Seating is limited and by reservation only— first come, first served. Please email Sister Cities Commissioner Yates Nobles at to reserve an observer’s seat.

Charlottesville and Besançon have been Sister Cities since 2006. Located in eastern France near the Swiss border, Besançon is surrounded almost entirely by the Doubs River. Both cities are set within agricultural settings that include vineyards and wineries. Both are home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Monticello and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and the Citadel in Besançon. And both are home to universities: UVA in Charlottesville and the University of Franche-Comté in Besançon.
