Hillsdale Drive Extension Opens Friday, December 22
The extension of Hillsdale Drive completes a two-lane road connection with dedicated turn lanes from Rio Road in the County of Albemarle to Hydraulic Road in the City of Charlottesville, parallel to Route 29. The 25 mph roadway was designed to facilitate local trips for residents to their homes, assisted living centers, the Senior Center and retail/entertainment businesses.
A new signal has been activated at Seminole Court and Hillsdale Drive. In addition, connections were made to India Road by a stop sign and to Zan Road with a new roundabout. The intersection with Greenbrier Drive was reconfigured with the realignment of Hillsdale Drive with the former Pepsi Place (now Hillsdale Drive). Vehicles on Greenbrier Drive will continue to stop while vehicles along Hillsdale Drive will free flow (no stop signs).
Construction on the Hillsdale Drive project began in June of 2016. The project included:
• A shared-use path on the east side of the road and a sidewalk on the west side, south of Greenbrier Drive;
• Bike lanes north of Greenbrier Drive and share the road arrows ("sharrows") south of Greenbrier Drive;
• Reconstruction and relocation of existing stormwater basin at Greenbrier Drive with native plantings;
• Landscaping with 86 Shade trees;
• Pedestrian Lighting.
Work will continue to finalize the landscaping, the stormwater basin and minor remediation repairs outside of the roadway. One item of work within the roadway is expected to take approximately one day and a traffic alert will be issued prior to any closures.
An official ribbon cutting will be held in January.
