Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund Names Cathy Bollinger for the 2017 Arts Award

The Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund, a Charlottesville-based initiative designed to enhance artistic discovery and creativity, is pleased to announce Cathy Bollinger as winner of its fourth annual Arts Award. The Arts Award celebrates inclusive art (visual art, music, writing, poetry, motion/dance) opportunities for people with disabilities within the community. An award celebration recognizing Cathy for promoting the art of music exploration throughout the Charlottesville-Albemarle area is scheduled for Monday, November 27, 2017 and is open to the public.

Cathy Bollinger is a Charlottesville board-certified music therapist, children’s songwriter and performer. She represents the spirit of the Mildred W. Spicer Arts Award through nearly 30 years of working with children of all ages and abilities in a variety of settings and through her work with children and adults with developmental and neurological disabilities including brain injuries, intellectual disabilities and autism. She represents the impact that a single individual can have within the arts community.  Cathy’s efforts have helped improve music opportunities for everyone – with and without disabilities, in group settings and one on one.

 The Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund was created in May 2013 in honor of Mildred Spicer’s retirement from Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department after 33 years as Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor. In addition to recognizing a local artist/mentor, musician or writer or organization supporting the arts, the Mildred W. Spicer Arts Fund provides individual scholarships to take classes and workshops related to the arts and to further develop individual art skills and expression.
