Transit Center Opens Downtown
Some Routes Will Change with the Opening
Posted Date: 3/26/2007

The Downtown Transit Station opened to the public on Monday, March 26.  The Station is located at 615 East Water Street across the Pedestrian Mall from City Hall.  The Station is open to the public from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  On March 26, Charlottesville Transit Service was offered FREE to all in celebration of the Station opening.

CTS services are located on the Water Street level of the Station and include a comfortable indoor waiting area and public restrooms.  CTS staff are on hand at the Station, with Rider’s Guides and other CTS passenger information.  The Visitor Center will begin service on the Pedestrian Mall level of the Station in April 2007.

The Downtown Transit Station is the new central hub for CTS bus routes, replacing the transfer points formerly located on Market Street at 2nd Street, NE and on Water Street at 2nd Street, SE.  These former transfer points will continue as CTS stops, but connections between buses should be made at the Station.  The Station will be a convenient way for CTS riders to make connections between CTS buses and to connect with Downtown Charlottesville.

The FREE Trolley and all CTS bus routes, except Route 5, make Station connections.  Route numbers and destinations will be displayed on the front and passenger-side of all buses.  CTS buses will be curbside on East Water Street.  Buses hold at the Station until the scheduled departure time.  Passengers should check the Rider’s Guide for the departure time of the bus that they need.

Beginning March 26, CTS changed Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 to offer an A and a B version.  After the A route arrives at the Station, it will depart as a B, and vice versa.  In addition to the name change, there are changes to the map and schedule for Routes 2B, 3B, 4B, and 6B. CTS guests can find these changes in the new Rider’s Guides which are available on CTS buses and at the Station.  Or they can call CTS at 296-7433.  Here are some other important changes that began on March 26:

  • Route 2B will now serve the area along Fifth Street Extended south of the City, including Southwood Mobile Home Park and County Office Building South.  CTS will no longer provide Route 2 service between Downtown and Barracks Shopping Center.  CTS will continue to provide Route 7 service between Downtown and Barracks Road Shopping Center.
  • Route 3B will now travel on Ridge Street, Cherry Avenue and 10th Street  between Downtown and Greenleaf Park.  Route 3B will not provide service between Downtown and the Corner.  CTS will continue to provide Route 7 service between Downtown and the Corner.
  • Route 4B will no longer travel into Johnson Village.  In this area the closest bus stop to UVA via Jefferson Park Avenue will be at Willard Drive and Cleveland Avenue.  Also in this area, the closest bus stop to Downtown via Cherry Avenue will be at Cherry Avenue and Rock Creek Road.
  • Route 6B will go directly from Downtown along Preston Avenue to Emmet Street and K-Mart.  Route 6B will not provide service on 10th Street between Preston Avenue and Page Street.  Route 3B will provide service on 10th Street between Preston Avenue and Page Street.
